Thank-you letters

Writing a thank-you letter

Some kindnesses deserve more than a quick text. A teacher who saw something in your child, a friend who showed up when it counted, a pastor who sat with your family. A letter tells them their kindness was noticed, and that it mattered.

Here are verses on gratitude and friendship, a sample letter, and how to make a thank-you feel like more than good manners.

Verses for a thank-you letter

All from the King James Bible, and all from the verses we print. When you write, we suggest verses that fit the occasion and the feeling you choose, and you pick the one that sounds right.

  • I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

    Philippians 1:3

Paul’s own words of thanks for his friends. Ideal for someone who has been there for years.

  • A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

    Proverbs 17:17

For the friend who stood by you through something hard.

  • And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

    Galatians 6:9

For teachers, volunteers and caregivers, whose work is often unseen.

  • Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.

    Romans 12:10

For someone who always puts others first.

Every line here is one our letters really use. It is only a starting point: you can change every line except the verse.

THE DOVE LETTER

Faith · Encouragement · A Brighter Tomorrow

Dear friend,

I wanted to thank you properly, not in passing.

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 17:17

Thank you. I mean it.

Warmly,

Emily

What to write

  • Say exactly what they did. “Thank you for driving me to every appointment in March” means more than “thank you for everything.”
  • Tell them what difference it made, to you or to your family.
  • Write while it is fresh, though a thank-you that arrives late is still welcome.
  • It suits the people who rarely get thanked: teachers, mentors, pastors, nurses and caregivers.

What to avoid

  • Making it about repaying them. Gratitude is not a debt.
  • Being so vague it could have been sent to anyone.
  • Tucking a request into the same letter. Let the thank-you stand on its own.

How it works for a thank-you letter

Choose “To say thank you” and how you want them to feel, whether that is loved, celebrated or at peace. You can pick a gentle, direct or warm tone.

Every line but the verse can be changed, so you can add the specific thing they did.

Posted the same or next business day. USPS typically delivers in 2 to 5 days, though this is not guaranteed.
